I had a calm couple of days planned. Early mornings in the garden, afternoons puttering with this and that in the kitchen, tranquil evenings immersed in fiction. Instead the cats are in rare form (terrible ten-months), my husband’s travelling fell through (yay), and social events popped up (mmm, sours).

Quiet solitude is cherished, but jubilant company and making the most of these final weekends of summer is good as well. Books and Lego birds can wait!

Salmon + peaches

Dreaming of Weekly Suppers past: salt block-grilled salmon + grilled peach, Vidalia and green bean salad with fresh basil and balsamic. Summer dining at the height of freshness. (Have you tried a culinary salt block? We were gifted one, and love it on the grill, especially with fish and shrimp.)

    Does the salt block work with chicken or beef, or aren’t they as suitable as fish? Glad you got to go to the “sours” grand opening! And as a couple, too! Just wait ’til your cats are old; the terrible ten months will be as nothing compared to the noisiness of an old cat! Enjoy your surprise weekend together. Once again, a great post!

      A salt block is certainly not an “every day” tool, but definitely a unique addition to the kitchen. It can absolutely be used with chicken, beef and other meats, as well as veg, fruit, cheese, and even as a presentation piece for salads. The Splendid Table talked with the author of Salt Block Cooking a few years ago — worth a read or listen if you’re interested in learning more about salt blocks. We did enjoy our trip to the new brewery together, and the rest of the weekend, too. Hope yours was nice also!

      The space is very nice with friendly staff; though, only one sour was available currently, and only in bottles. It’s an offshoot of another brewery in town, Broomtail Craft Brewery, and their regular offerings made up the draft list. Obviously it’s brand new, getting its footing — definitely worth checking in on again when you’re in town!
